Munros


Munros are named after Sir Hugh T. Munro, who in 1891, surveyed all the country's mountains over 3,000 feet. Having climbed all 284 — a popular pursuit — a walker is given the name of Munroist. There are over 20 within ninety minutes drive from The Taychreggan. Listed below are some of the closest ones.


The Cruachan Hills
A short thirty minute drive will bring you to the four closest munros.

Mountain: Ben Cruachan
Pronounced: Ben Kroo-achan
Translation: Stacky Hill
Height: 3694ft/1126m

Mountain: Stob Diamh
Pronounced: Stop Dyv
Translation: Peak of the Stag
Height: 3274ft/998m

Approximate climbing time for both is 5 to 8 hrs.
Access point is the Falls of Cruachan.


Mountain: Beinn a'Chochuill
Pronounced: Ben Cho-Chil
Translation: Hill of the Hood
Height: 3215ft/980m

Mountain: Beinn Eunaich
Pronounced: Ben Ayneech
Translation: Fowling Hill
Height: 3245ft/989m

Approximate climbing time is 5 to 8 hrs. Access point is Drishaig.


Bridge of Orchy Hills
A one hour drive from Taychreggan will bring you to Bridge of Orchy and the following 5 munros, all of which are easily accessed from this point.

Mountain: Beinn Dorain
Pronounced: Ben Doa-ran
Translation: Hill of the Otter
Height: 3530ft/1076m


Mountain: Beinn An Dothaidh
Pronounced: Ben Daw-ee
Translation: Hill of the Scorching
Height: 3287ft/1002m

To climb both of these would take approximately 5 to 7 hours. The access point is Bridge of Orchy Station.

Mountain: Beinn Achaladair
Pronounced: Ben Achalatur
Translation: Field of Hard Water
Height: 3409ft/1039m


Mountain: Beinn a'Chreachain
Pronounced: Ben a Chrechan
Translation: Hill of the Clamshell
Height: 3547ft/1081m

To climb both of these would take approximately 6 to 8 hours and the access point for them is the Achallader Farm car park.

Mountain: Beinn Mhanach
Pronounced: Ben Vanach
Translation: Monk Hill
Height: 3130ft/954m

Approximate climbing time is 5 to 8 hrs and access is from the A82 near Auch.


The Crianlarich Hills
The area around Crianlarich, again a leisurely one hour drive from the Hotel, gives you a choice of seven peaks to climb.

Height: 3061ft/933m

The climb would take approximately 4 to 5 hours and the access point is Beinglas.

Pronounced: An Castail
Translation: The Castle
Height: 3264ft/995m


Mountain: Beinn a'Chroin
Pronounced: Ben a Kroin
Translation: Hill of Danger
Height: 3084ft/940m

To climb both of these would take approximately 4 to 6 hours. The access point is Glen Falloch.

Mountain: Cruach Ardrain
Pronounced: Kroo-ach Ardrain
Translation: Stack of the High Part
Height: 3431ft/1046

Mountain: Beinn Tulaichean
Pronounced: Ben Too-leach-an
Translation: Hill of Hillocks
Height: 3104ft/946m

The approximate time for both of these is 5 to 7 hours and they are accessed just south of Crianlarich on the A82.

Mountain: Stob Binnein
Pronounced: Stobinyan
Translation: Hill of the Anvil
Height: 3822ft/1165m
To climb these will take approximately 6 to 8 hours and they are accessed at Benmore Farm.

This list gives you an idea of some of the munros in the area, all within an hours drive. There are a total of nineteen within an hour and a further thirty-four within an hour and a half, making the Hotel an ideal base.

It is advisable to inform someone at Reception if you are going Hill Walking or Climbing, stating your intended route and the approximate time of your return. This is purely for your own safety.
